Q: What are the differences between XFP and SFP+ optical modules?

A: (1) They differ in appearance, with SFP+ being smaller in size compared to XFP;

(2) Functionality varies, as XFP modules, unlike SFP+ modules, include signal modulation, serialization/deserialization, MAC, clock and data recovery (CDR), and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) functions. Therefore, XFP modules are necessary to compensate when these functions are not integrated into the switch/router’s motherboard.

(3) They comply with different protocols: XFP follows the XFP MSA Agreement, while SFP+ adheres to IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, and SFF-8432 standards.
