Q、What types of SFP optical modules are there?

A、SFP optical modules refer to small form-factor pluggable transceiver modules extensively used in the telecommunications sector. These modules come in a variety of types, including BIDI-SFP, electrical interface SFP, CWDM SFP, DWDM SFP, and SFP+ optical modules. Notably, compared to similar types like XFP, X2, and XENPAK optical modules, SFP modules not only enable direct connection but also offer a cost advantage.

Difference between SFP Ports and RJ45 Ports

While both SFP ports and RJ45 ports have a maximum transmission rate of 1000Mbps, they present several distinctions:

  • Application Diversity: An SFP port on a switch necessitates an SFP optical module and fiber patch cords for data transmission, whereas an RJ45 port on a switch can transmit data directly via Ethernet cables.
  • Transmission Distance Variation: RJ45 ports primarily transmit data through Ethernet cables, with a maximum reach limited to the cable’s capacity, usually 100 meters. Conversely, SFP ports require SFP optical modules and fiber jumpers for transmission, with the maximum distance defined by the SFP module’s capability, which can extend up to 160 meters.

Note: When deploying single-mode fiber (SMF) for shorter distances, an optical attenuator must be introduced into the link to prevent receiver overload.

Additionally, in terms of versatility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness—both in terms of the ports themselves and networking equipment such as switches—SFPs offer superior benefits over RJ45.

Q、Can an SFP Port Connect to an RJ45 Port?

A、Absolutely. For instance, to connect a 1G SFP switch to a 1G RJ45 switch, we merely need to utilize a Gigabit Ethernet copper module on the 1G SFP switch. Since the copper module features an SFP port on one end and an RJ45 interface on the other, insert the SFP end into the 1G SFP switch, and then an Ethernet cable can be used to bridge the RJ45 side of the copper module to the RJ45 port on the 1G RJ45 switch.
