QSFP28 transceiver is designed for 100G speeds and using the 4×25 wiring specification. Now, technology of QSFP28 is relatively matured. With the movement to reduce costs, the QSFP28 transceiver become increasing popular in the market. Similar to 40G QSFP+ that is implemented using four 10Gbps lanes, the QSFP28 uses four 25Gbps lanes with parallel technology, eliminating the costly gearbox found in the other version of 100G transceiver like CFP, CFP2, and the CPAK. Additionally, the QSFP28 transceiver has an upgraded electrical interface to support signaling up to 28Gbps signals, yet keeps all of the physical dimensions of its predecessor.

QSFP28 100G transceiver transmission over 4 x 25G channels
Our range of QSFP28 transceivers are hot-pluggable modules that use either singlemode (9/125) or multimode (50/125) fibre cables. Maximum transmission distances range from 100m up to 30km and use LC duplex or MTP? (MPO) connectors, depending on the transceiver and fibre type used.
QSFP28 transceivers transmit data using NRZ (non-return zero modulation) over 4 x 25G channels but can use two different ways to transmit the data.QSFP28 over 8 fibres and one wavelength (4 x 25G NRZ)
QSFP28 transceivers transmitting over 8 fibres use 4 x 25G channels over 4 fibre pairs using the same wavelength.
Transceivers using this method have an MPO port and can use either SR4 transmission over multimode (50/125) fibre up to 100m or PSM4 over singlemode (9/125) up to 2km.
These transceivers use 4 x 25G channels of NRZ (non-return zero) modulation. Using this method also means you can breakout to 4 x 25G ports.
QSFP28 over 2 fibres and four wavelengths (4 x NRZ)
100G transceiver modules using two fibres still transmit over 4 x 25G NRZ signals but use four separate wavelengths instead. Unlike transmitting over 8 fibres, the signals cannot be split so can only connect one QSFP28 transceiver to another. CWDM4, LR4 and ER4 transceivers use this method.
QSFP 100G Laser Types
The laser plays an important role in the 100G QSFP28 optical transceivers which have five major types: VCSEL, FP, DFB, DML, and EML. Different types of lasers have different working wavelengths, modes and application environments.
| Laser Type | Wavelength | Working Mode | Application Scenario |
|---|---|---|---|
| VSCEL | 850nm | Surface Emitting | Within 200m |
| FP | 1310nm/1550nm | Edge Emitting | 500m-10km |
| DFB | 1310nm/1550nm | Edge Emitting | 40km |
| DML | 1310nm/1550nm | Direct Modulated | 500m-10km |
| EML | 1310nm/1550nm | Electro-absorption Modulated | 40km |
- The VCSEL laser features a small size, low power consumption, easy integration, low price, and high coupling efficiency with multimode fibers, which is often used for QSFP28 SR4 modules.
- The EML, with its small dispersion, large extinction and long-distance transmission, is designed to meet all those requirements for QSFP 100G LR4 and QSFP 100G ER4 transceivers.
- The DML can realize signal modulation through the way of modulating the injection current of the laser. Thus, it is suitable for QSFP28 PSM4 and QSFP28 CWDM4 modules with a transmission distance of 500m or 2km.
